Section VIII: Analysis of Environmental Parameters and Trace Compounds

Section VIII consists of more than 120 colleagues from the fields of research, testing, consulting and from the industrial sector.

Since its establishment in 1974, the objective of this group has been to work on interdisciplinary, complex analytical issues and to pool the necessary methodological work. This has led to close cooperation, in particular with sections II and VI, whose chairmen are part of section VIII’s executive committee. In addition to the development and testing of analytical methods, position papers are written, statements are made on methods or their development on a national as well as international level and draft laws are commented upon.

For method validation, quality assurance and to maintain professional expertise, the section regularly carries out ring tests (interlaboratory studies). The results guarantee uniform methods of analysis and evaluation criteria and help to ensure that solutions can be found to current environmental issues, especially those concerning agriculture.

The practical work takes place in three working groups so that the various tasks can be fulfilled as promptly as possible:

Within these working groups, project teams are formed to work on current issues. These teams deal with analytical problems, carry out ring tests and develop methods to the extent that the section can adopt it as a VDLUFA “Verbandsmethode”. These methods are then published in volume VII “Environmental Analysis” of the VDLUFA Methods Book.

Members of section VIII work in different committees within the Federal and Länder governments and also in the European Union where they help to prepare or launch environmental policies. This warrants the active representation of German interests in national and international standardisation bodies based on the work performed in the section.
